Patalsu Peak Day Hike; Trails around Manali

Training for the climbing season is extremely important to ensure our body stays fit enough to perform at our best level in the outdoors.

During one of our recent training sessions, we planned to hike up to the summit of Patalsu Peak, ~4230m, a fairly easy day hike near Manali which poses quite a challenge in the month of April due to the amount of snow.

Our friend Manav reached out to us regarding this quick day hike, and me an Vinay promptly agreed to join their group.

We started hiking on a clear, sunny day at 7:30am on the 17th of April, 2024 from the Solang Village. Within a couple of hours, we had left the tree-line behind and had started walking on the snowy slopes. It had snowed a lot 2 days prior to our hike, and since the sun had been shining bright today there was a chance of an avalanche on the slopes of Patalsu. We navigated our way carefully along the ridge line to avoid getting caught in any accidents.

The team was strong and we all managed to reach the top around 1:45pm. We decided not to hike to the actual summit as the ridge was exposed on both the ends and there was a lot of snowfall as well. So we decided to stop around ~4180m and then turned around safely. Reached back to the Solang Village safely in a few hours and headed back to Manali after a successful day of speed hiking.

Overall, we managed to gain an altitude of ~1800m in 6 hours, trail blazing our way through the snow.
